Why Should I (or my child) Get assessed?

Understanding whether ADHD or Autism is part of your or your child’s experience can be life-changing. A Brain Style Profile offers valuable insights into how the brain functions, illuminating both strengths and challenges that may have gone unrecognized. For children, an early profile can pave the way for tailored support in school and social settings, helping them thrive and build confidence. For adults, a Brain Style Profile provides a framework to better understand past struggles, improve relationships, and make informed choices about work, daily routines, and personal goals.

A Brain Style Profile assessment at Mindful Way Therapy goes beyond just answering questions—it’s a step toward embracing your or your child’s unique neurodivergent identity. By understanding how ADHD or Autism affects thinking, emotions, and interactions, you can access the right tools, strategies, and resources to foster growth and well-being. Unlike traditional evaluations, our Brain Style Profile (a term coined from the MIGDAS-2 Assessment) highlights personal strengths and differences; supports self-discovery; and offers practical guidance to help neurodivergent individuals thrive. Through a blend of standardized tools and personalized consultations, we dive into how your brain works, identifying patterns that reveal areas of both comfort and difficulty. This profile is more than just a diagnosis—it’s a personalized roadmap that helps illuminate the underlying factors influencing focus, organization, social interaction, and emotional regulation.

What is a Brain Style Profile?

Why a "neuro-divergent affirming"  assessment?

A Neurodivergent Affirming Assessment views traits like ADHD and Autism as natural parts of identity, focusing on strengths rather than deficits. This approach provides insight into unique qualities and support needs without clinical or pathologizing language, empowering individuals and families with a more holistic understanding.

How is This Different from a Typical Assessment?

  • Strength-Based Focus: We highlight unique strengths, reframing traits as valuable differences rather than challenges.

  • Respectful Language: Our assessments avoid pathologizing terms, respecting neurodivergent traits as natural variations.

  • Person-Centered: We see the whole person, not just symptoms, fostering self-confidence and acceptance.

  • Empowering Recommendations: Strategies are tailored to help clients thrive as they are, supporting genuine self-expression rather than conformity.

A Neurodivergent Affirming Assessment at Mindful Way Therapy offers more than answers—it helps individuals understand, appreciate, and embrace who they are.

If you or your child often face challenges with focus, organization, emotional regulation, or social interactions, an assessment can provide clarity and direction. Here are some reasons why a Brain Style Profile assessment may be beneficial:

  • Understanding Unique Traits: If you've noticed traits like intense focus on interests, sensory sensitivities, or a different approach to social connections, an assessment can help identify and understand these characteristics.

  • Unpacking Life Experiences: For adults, an assessment can offer insights into past struggles with work, relationships, or daily routines, helping to explain patterns that may have felt confusing or isolating.

  • Finding Support: An assessment can open doors to support at school, work, home, and in social settings, providing tools that enhance confidence and growth. Personalized recommendations can help both children and adults thrive in their environments. Our therapists are more than happy to continue supporting you post-diagnosis.

  • Gaining Self-Awareness: A Brain Style Profile isn’t just about finding answers; it’s about empowering you to better understand and embrace who you are, gaining practical recommendations tailored to your strengths and needs.

Whether you're seeking answers, support, or a path toward greater self-acceptance, an assessment can be a meaningful first step.

All of our post-Masters clinicians have received training on providing Neurodivergent Affirming ADHD Assessments using the Barkley Family of Assessments, and for adolescents, the BASC-3 Assessment (see more below).

For our Brain Style Profile assessments, Ryne has received training on using the MIGDAS-2, a sensory-based and neurodivergent qualitative assessment to diagnose Autism in adolescents and adults. Ryne is also part of several therapist collectives to receive ongoing support and guidance in continuing to ensure ongoing competence in providing Neurodivergent Affirming Assessments.
